October Jobs Report

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Bob Gibbs (R-OH) issued the following statement in response to today’s report that the economy created 80,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate is 9%:

“This morning we received the news that the economy added 80,000 jobs in October.  While job growth is better than job losses, this level of job growth is simply not going to get our economy turned around.

“It is clear that the threat of higher taxes, more spending, and new regulatory burdens from Washington have left employers paralyzed by uncertainty, unable to hire or invest because they simply don’t know what’s coming next.

“Only by passing legislation removing these threats, as the House of Representatives has done and will continue to do, will we get our economy turned around and creating jobs.  But for the past 11 months, the House of Representatives has passed over 20 bipartisan jobs bills only to have them ignored by Senator Harry Reid and the Democratic controlled Senate.

“While these bills that would allow the private sector to begin creating jobs continue piling up on the doorstep of the United States Senate, unemployment remains unacceptably high.  It is long past time for the Senate to act.  I urge the Senate Democrats to join us in enacting real solutions to the challenges facing the American people and bring these bipartisan bills to a vote immediately.”
