Congressman Bob Gibbs Statement on the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Gibbs (R-OH) released the following statement following passage of H.R. 822, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011:”
“National reciprocity for concealed carry permits is a big step toward protecting our second amendment rights as law-abiding gun owners,” said Gibbs. “I think we found a way to strike a balance between state’s rights and reducing the regulatory patchwork that made the issue of concealed carry very confusing across state borders.
“While my colleagues on the other side of the aisle claim this will hinder law enforcement, it will in fact do the opposite. Studies show that concealed carry laws reduce violent crime rates by deterring would-be assailants and by allowing law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.
“This law by no means circumvents any state or local laws. Just as one state recognizes the driver’s license from another state, H.R. 822 simply allows people with valid state-issued concealed firearm permits or licenses to carry a concealed firearm in all states that also issue concealed firearm permits or licenses.
“This bill simply allows law abiding citizens to practice their constitutional right.”
