Last-Ditch Effort by the Obama Administration to Recover Jobs Lost Under His Proposed Defense Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to the wave of blame on the Obama Administration’s proposed plan to cut a C-27J program and subsequently eliminate over 800 Mansfield jobs, the President has backtracked and claims that he has a plan to salvage the jobs that would be lost at Mansfield Lahm Air National Guard Base.
In a last-ditch effort to compensate for White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s incognizant response to a request for comment on the Ohio jobs that would be cut under Obama’s proposed defense budget, the Administration is now saying they are working toward finding a mission for the 179th Airlift Wing. When asked yesterday, the White House was oblivious to the fact the President’s own plan could shut down the airport and eliminate 800 local jobs in Mansfield. Carney was asked to comment on Obama’s plan, and replied, “I’m not aware of the policy implications or what issue you’re discussing.”
President Obama arrived this morning at Mansfield-Lahm Airport, home of the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard, where he has plans to cancel a C-27J program and leave the base without a flying mission.
The Obama Administration’s plan to cancel the C-27J cargo aircraft program would eliminate hundreds of local jobs and force the American taxpayer to pick up the tab for 21 brand new aircraft, four of which are based in Mansfield.
Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement regarding the White House’s misguided defense policies:
“Back in March, the Ohio Delegation came together in a bipartisan effort to express concern over the Obama Administration’s proposed cuts to Ohio Air National Guard facilities. We met with Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and asked if there was a plan to save the jobs that Obama proposed cutting, and he repeatedly told us there was no such plan to give Mansfield a new mission.
“But now that these job cuts are receiving national attention and the White House is being thrust into the spotlight for its misguided plan to cut the C-27J program and all of the jobs that are associated with it, Obama is putting his tail between his legs and claiming that he will find a plan to salvage the base.
“The Obama Administration’s cursory effort to salvage these jobs is unfortunately extremely demonstrative of the White House’s disconnect with the American people. The servicemen and women of the 179th Airlift Wing deserve a straight answer about the future of their jobs and I look forward to hearing more details about the new follow-on mission.”
