WASHINGTON – Congressman Bob Gibbs issued the following statement today regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, DC and his address to a joint session of Congress.

“Today I was honored to welcome Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to the House floor to address a joint session of Congress for the first time since 1996.  I fully support Israel and the Prime Minister’s powerful words about the unbreakable bond between the United States and Israel.

“President Obama has called for Israel to accept a settlement with a government backed by Hamas, a terrorist group committed to Israel's destruction.  President Obama’s stark departure from past administrations asks Israel to retreat to its indefensible pre-1967 borders, jeopardizing the security of our long standing ally.

“I have signed H. Res. 268, a resolution reaffirming the United States’ commitment to a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, because our alliance with Israel is vital to our efforts to achieve a peaceful and more democratic Middle East.  The United States must remain steadfast in our commitment to the strongest democracy in the region because Israel is a sovereign nation with the right to exist, defend itself, and prosper.”
