Gibbs Statement on President Trump’s Coal Executive Order

WASHINGTON, DC – After President Trump signed the executive order rescinding the Obama Administration’s Clean Power Plan, Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement:

“I commend President Trump for rolling back another of the Obama Administration’s unnecessary and unconstitutional executive actions.  The so-called “Clean Power Plan” raised serious constitutional concerns regarding the scope of EPA’s authority with potentially disastrous consequences to the coal industry, leading the US Supreme Court to halt the plan until these questions were addressed by the courts. The federal government’s own Energy Information Administration said the CPP would increase the costs of electricity for families nationwide with questionable results. Just like EPA’s mercury rule, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2015, and the Waters of the United States Rule recently rescinded by President Trump, the CPP is nothing more than a Washington-knows-best, one-size-fits-all mandate that ignores free-market principles.

“President Trump continues to make good on his promises and give the hard-working people of once-forgotten towns in coal country a chance at making a good living without the fear of government bureaucrats shutting down the industry they depend on to raise their families.”
